ABSTRACT
The genetic diversity among 8 pea (Pisum sativum L.) genotypes was analyzed using 7 simple sequence repeat markers. A total of 15 polymorphic bands, with an average of 2.28 bands per primer, were obtained. The polymorphism information content ranged from 0.194 to 0.339 . The variation in genetic diversity among these cultivars ranged from 0.218 to 0.437. Cluster analysis based on Jaccard's similarity coefficient using the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean (UPGMA) revealed 2 distinct groups, A and B, comprising 1 and 7 genotypes, respectively. Group B was further differentiated into 2 clusters, I and II , with 3 and 4 genotypes, respectively. On the basis of Jaccard's similarity coefficient genotypes 'Pant P 96' and 'Pant P 25' were found genetically more distant suggesting that these varieties can be used in future hybridization programmes to generate desirable segregants. The study indicates SSR as a useful tool in determining the genetic diversity among genotypes in fieldpea as it is not influenced by environmental conditions.
