ABSTRACT
The study was framed with the objective to study the economic impacts of System of Rice Intensification (SRI). Research was undertaken in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh States where SRI was first introduced in India. The study showed that the yield increase through SRI practices in comparison to non-SRI (conventional) was 37 to 39 per cent. The SRI farmers gained an additional per hectare gross income of 36 to 38 per cent. The study showed that per hectare saving in total variable cost due to SRI was 12 to 22 per cent. Reduction in 30 to 32 per cent of labour requirement per hectare was reported through SRI practices. Hence, SRI appears to be a significant alternative for raising productivity and managing paddy-based farming in resource-scarce regions globally.
