ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2015 to study the performance of maize under intercropping system with polebean with varied planting geometry and nutrient management. The experiment consisted of ten treatments which includes two row spacing (60 cm and 75/45 cm under paired row with intra row spacing of 30 cm for maize), two polebean sowing window (simultaneously with maize and 10 days after sowing of maize), two levels of fertilizer for polebean (100 and 50 % recommended dose of fertilizer) and sole crops of maize and polebean. Experiment was laid out with RCBD and treatments were replicated thrice. Among treatments under investigation, sole maize at 60 cm x 30 cm recorded significantly higher results with respect to growth, yield, economics and nutrient uptake. Among the intercropping treatments, maize + polebean simultaneously sown under paired row with application of recommended dose of fertiliser (RDF) for both the crops was recorded significantly higher growth attributing parameters such as plant height (196.01 cm), number of leaves (12.60), leaf area index (LAI) (4.29), total dry matter production (TDMP) (273.43 g plant -1), crop growth rate (CGR) (28.57 g cm-2 day-1) and cob length (19.03 cm), cob girth (15.68 cm), seed yield per plant (221.07 g) and significant superiority of growth and yield attributes were ultimately reflected in significantly higher grain and stover yields. Further, significantly higher gross returns, net returns and BCR of maize was also registered with said treatment. Again maize + polebean simultaneously sown under paired row with application of recommended RDF for both the crops recorded significantly higher nitrogen (129.1 kg ha-1), phosphorous (22.36 kg ha-1) and potassium (53.12 kg ha-1) uptake by maize under sole crop treatment
