ABSTRACT
In this study, TS/SNF in buffalo milk collected from five different dairy plants of Gujarat State were estimated using volumetric and gravimetric method. Two modified Richmond formulae for calculating TS/SNF have been proposed for each dairy plants. The specific equation worked out for individual dairy plant reflects the region specific chemical composition of milk, array of factors affecting milk composition, numbers of samples taken for working out formula and other unforeseen observations, which could be seen from correction factor ranging from 0.40 to 1.45 in M1 and 0.57 to 1.66 in M2 equation respectively to match with total solids measurements by official method for buffalo milks. The equation TS = CLR/4 + 1.25 F+ correction factor was more convenient and provided the TS/SNF values very close to the results for TS obtained by gravimetric method.
