ABSTRACT
A comparative study on plant morphological, yield and quality characters of arabica coffee (Coffea arabica L.) genotypes was carried out at Coffee Board, Coffee Research Sub Station, Chettalli, Coorg district, Karnataka for three consequent years to study the variation in the vegetative and yield component characters including flower, fruit and quality. Eighty five genotypes exhibited significant variation for all the traits in three seasons of the study. The per se performance of present study revealed that the traits viz., plant height, bush diameter, stem girth, number of primary branches, length of primary branches, internodal length, leaf area were high in Tafarikela, Maragogipe, Cauvery x Sln.9 and S.12, Kaffa. Similarly the same genotypes also registered the highest per se values for number of flowers per axil, number of flowers per node, fruit set percentage, number of fruits per node, fruit length, fruit width, weight of fruits per plant and percentage of fruit fertility. For the traits viz., percentage of A grade beans and weight of 100 A grade beans, the genotypes Cioccie, Agaro, Maragogipe and Taferikela recorded highest per se values. Mean value for percentage of caffeine content was found higher in the genotypes Kents, closely followed by Agaro, Maragogipe, Tafarikela and Cauvery x Sln. 9. Hence the genotypes can be exploited by selection for further breeding programmes. The maximum clean coffee per hectare were recorded by the genotypes Tafarikela followed by Maragogipe, Cauvery x Sln.9, S12, Kaffa and Agaro.
