ABSTRACT
Triticum durum is one of the important species cultivated in peninsular zone after Triticum aestivum. AICRP on wheat UAS, Dharwad has developed an elite variety UAS-428 a high yielding rust resistant durum wheat variety has been released by central sub-committee on crop standards and notifications for Peninsular zone of India under timely sown irrigated conditions during 2012. It exhibited grain yield of 47.9 q/ha and showed 14 per cent increased yield over the best check variety NIDW-295 (42 q/ha). The variety has shown better adaptability to sowing periods and possessed multiple disease resistance to prevailing rust races (brown and black rust) and spot blotch incidence. This new variety UAS 428 possessed leaf rust and stem rust resistant genes Lr 23 and Sr 11 respectively. UAS-428 has bolder seeds with grain weight of 43.79 g, higher iron (38.2 ppm) and zinc (30.4 ppm) content.
