S.K. JAIN and P.R. PATEL. 2018. A new sorghum variety “Gujarat Jowar 43 (GJ 43)”  for feed and fodder security of milch animals in Gujarat. Green Farming  Vol. 9 (6) : 944-948 ; November-December, 2018

ABSTRACT
An improved dual purpose sorghum variety DS-127(GJ 43) was developed from cross (AKR 354 x SPV 1616) followed by continuous evaluation and selection at Sorghum Research Station, S.D. Agricultural University Deesa during year 2009-10 to 2013-14. After found promising in preliminary evaluation trial in kharif 2014, it was tested in multilocation trial from kharif 2015 to kharif 2017. It was found superior for grain yield with average increment of 46.85 % and 22.66 % over the years and locations against checks GJ 39, CSV 20, respectively. It was also found superior for dry fodder yield with average increment of 32.13% and 14.90% over the years and locations against checks GJ 39, CSV 20, respectively. For grain yield the frequency of superiority of the proposed variety was 15/16 and for fodder yield the frequency of superiority of the proposed variety was 14/17 over years and locations. Further this variety exhibited desirable characteristics like Good height with long and broad leaves, long to medium peduncle with medium long semi compact panicle, short glume length with pearly white grains. Moderately resistance to disease and lower infestation of shoot fly and stem borer than checks. It exhibited more or less similarity in quality parameters as compared to check varieties. Therefore, it may be considered for recommendation as dual purpose for kharif season in Gujarat State.
