ABSTRACT
The adoption of insitu trenching, mulching and subsoil bio-massing in inter rows of existing mulberry garden had favourable effect on improving soil properties by increasing macro and micronutrient status in rainfed mulberry garden. The experiment was conducted from 2007-2010 at Department of sericulture, U.A.S, G.K.V.K, Bangalore. Formation of two trenches on either side of the mulberry rows (i.e., trench a- Biomass filled closed trench and trench b-water harvesting open trench with mulch) significantly increased the primary nutrients like available nitrogen (M2 : Trench a : 306.2 & Trench b : 291 kg/ha and 280.4kg/ha in M1), available phosphorus (M2 Trench a : 41.30 & Trench b : 30.8 kg/ha and 29.61 kg/ha in M1) and available potash (M2 Trench a 295 & Trench b 285.6 kg/ha 277 kg/ha in M1) along with secondary nutrients like calcium, magnesium and sulphur. Apart from this micronutrients status like zinc, copper, boron, iron and manganese was also significantly increased with improved practice compared to control plot (M1). As the crop receives nutrients from both sides i.e. from biomass filled (FYM and green manure) closed trench (Trench; a) and from the water harvesting open trench with organic mulches (Trench ; b) the total nutrient content will be higher than the control plot where pit system of cultivation is practiced (M1). Hence this technology can successfully be used for improving yield in rainfed mulberry garden.
