ABSTRACT
Field experiments were conducted during 2006 - 2009 at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore to diversify traditional finger millet - cotton - sorghum cropping system of irrigated uplands of Western zone of Tamil Nadu. The experiments were laid out in randomised block design with three replications. Among the different cropping systems tested, beet root – greengram – maize gave the highest cotton equivalent yield (5753 kg/ha) which was comparable with cotton + greengram – maize – sunflower (5705 kg/ha) and maize – cowpea – tomato (5470 kg/ha). This system also recorded higher production efficiency (18.9 kg/ha/day) and economic efficiency (264 Rs/ha/day), which indicates the need for integration of vegetable crops due to high per day productivity over the other crops. The higher B: C ratio (3.47) and sustainability yield index (SYI) (0.95) were registered in maize – cowpea – tomato. Lablab – sesame – brinjal had the higher land use efficiency (LUE) (97.3%). The higher water use efficiency (WUE) was noticed in cotton + greengram – maize – sunflower (2.89 kg/ha/mm).
