ABSTRACT
Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. subsp. Pekinensis) is an important winter season exotic vegetable. The present investigation was carried out at Horticultural Research Station Mondouri, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Nadia, during the year 2010-2012. Five different varieties (Optiko, Tropical Delight, Tropic Prince, Summer King and Asia Vigour) were taken in to study to evaluate growth, yield and quality. Maximum plant height (29cm), head length (31.53 cm), head width (16 cm) was observed in variety Optiko followed by Summer king and Tropical delight and has the positive effect on growth characteristics as compare to the rest of the varieties. Days required to head initiation (30.15) and days required to harvesting (60.63) was observed minimum in the variety Optiko which is preferable, maximum was observed in Tropical Delight and Summer King. Maximum total head weight (1.53kg), net head weight (0.83kg), head yield/plot (20.67kg), head yield/ha (330.67q) was observed in variety Optiko followed by Summer King and Tropical Delight. Maximum TSS (3.77 degree Brix), total soluble sugar (6.91%), total chl. (3.79mg/lit), carotene (5.68µg/100gm), ascorbic acid (51.50 mg/100gm) was observed in the variety Optiko followed by Tropical Delight and Asia vigour. Amongst these five varieties, three varieties namely Optiko, Tropical Delight and Summer King have proved to be most significant in relation to the most of the quantitative and qualitative characters. The results of the present findings may conclude that among the five varieties Optiko has been found to be superior in respect to growth, yield and quality.
