ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of biocompost and inorganic fertilizers on yield and quality of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) variety Kufri Bahar at Horticulture Research Center of SVPUA&T, Meerut (U.P.). The treatments consisted application of 25%, 37.5%, 50%, 62.5%, 75%, 87.5% and 100% NPK through chemical fertilizers and 2, 4, 6,8,10 and 12 tha-1 of biocompost as an organic source of nutrients. The highest growth attributes, fresh and dry shoot weight, tuber yield and biomass yield at 90 DAP and at harvest and crude protein content and harvest index at 60 90 DAP, moreover NPK content and uptake in shoot and tuber at 60 and 90 DAP and available soil nutrient status viz., NPK at 60 and 90 DAP were recorded significantly in 100% NPK followed by 87.5% NPK with the least in control. Application effect of biocompost @ 12 tha-1 was found to be similar to 50% NPK in respect of potato yield, while the application of inorganic fertilizers above 50% NPK showed superiority in terms of performance and productivety over all the doses of biocompost. Crude protein content of tuber was found to be highest in 100% NPK whereas micronutrients content (Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu) were found in plots treated with biocompost application @12 tha-1. This study indicated that application of biocompost @12 t ha-1 can substitute half of the recommended dose of NPK and the quality of potato improved due to application of biocompost.
