ABSTRACT
The experiment was carried out by growing 13 families each with 5 progenies of F3 generation of bread wheat in compact family block design with three replications in two environments viz., normal sown (E1) and very late sown (E2) during rabi 2003-04. Mean per se performance for grain yield and almost other traits revealed that E1 was identified as the most favorable environment than E2. Family C11 had highest magnitude of variability for biological yield and grain yield in normal sown environment (E1). This family also showed highest magnitude of variability for heat susceptibility index (%). Family C12 and C5 in E2 followed by C1 in both environments showed highest magnitude of variability for protein content. Family C1 was considered as desirable for both the environments as evident by highly significant grain yielder. For normal sowing, family C12 was the best followed by C11, C7 and C13. Their best progenies were also superior to best check for grain yield i.e. C12 P2, C11P5, C7P5 and C13 P5 and other traits. Handling of segregants was followed by pedigree method while its identification was based on morphological observation and on seven different quantitative traits measured including protein content. In normal sown environment (E1) 14 best plants were drawn belonging to early maturity progenies viz., C1P1-1, C1P1-3, C2P2-1, C2P5-4 and C9P5-2, heat tolerance progenies viz., C3P4-2, C3P4-5, C12P2-13 and C12P1-4. On the other hand in very late sown environment (E2), 9 best plants were identified belonging to medium maturity progenies viz., C1P3-1, C4P3-3, C1P4-2, C12P2-2 and C5P4-9.
