ABSTRACT
A field investigation was conducted during kharif seasons of 2014, 2015 and 2016 at Main Sorghum Research Station, Navsari Agricultural University, Surat, Gujarat to assess the pest incidence on various genotypes of grain sorghum cultivation under different sowing dates. Sixteen treatment combinations were evaluated in factorial Randomized block design with three replications. Treatments were comprised of four sowing dates i.e. D1 : Onset of monsoon, D2 : 15 days after first date of sowing, D3 : 30 days after first date of sowing, D4 : 45 days after first date of sowing. Four sorghum genotypes i.e. V1 : GJ 38, V2 : GJ 42, V3 : SR 2872 and V4 : SR 1904 were tested. Sowing of sorghum at onset of monsoon (treatment D1) found good, recording minimum infestation of shoot fly (18.22 and 27.07% SFDH at 14 DAE and 28 DAE, respectively) and stem borer dead hearts 26.38% at 45 DAE which also resulted higher grain (3253 kg/ha) and stover (11471 kg/ha) yield with higher benefit : cost ratio (1.40) and net return (59856 `/ha). Genotype SR 2872 and GJ 42 found more resistant to shoot fly attack recording 20.33 and 20.52% SFDH % at 14 DAE and 31.31 and 31.47% SFDH at 28 DAE, respectively. Genotype SR 2872 recorded highest grain yield (2406 kg/ha) and stover yield (9299 kg/ha). The results showed that sowing sorghum cultivar SR 2872 or GJ 42 at the time of onset of monsoon to escape from shoot fly and stem borer attack.
