ABSTRACT
The assessment of the energy requirements of the different cropping systems was carried out at CSK HPKV, Palampur in the year 2011-12. Eight cropping sequences viz., maize – wheat, maize (green cob) + frenchbean (pole type) – pea – summer squash, maize + soybean – garlic, maize (green cob) – broccoli – potato, maize (green cob) + asparagus bean – radish – onion, maize (green cob) + mash – cauliflower – frenchbean, maize (green cob) + ricebean – cauliflower – buckwheat, maize (green cob) + asparagus bean – broccoli – radish were evaluated for their production potential and energy use pattern. Study revealed that maize (green cob) + asparagus bean – radish – onion (36.9 t/ha) and maize (green cob) + frenchbean (pole type) – pea – summer squash (35.0 t/ha) sequences resulted in significantly higher maize grain equivalent yield than other crop sequences. The highest total energy input was recorded in maize (green cob) - broccoli- potato (57.03x103 MJ/ha) followed by maize (green cob) + asparagus bean- radish- onion (49.64x103 MJ/ha) and maize (Green cob) + asparagus bean-brocolli- radish (43.95x103 MJ/ha). The highest energy input was added through fertilizers (46.5 to 60.4%) followed by FYM (16.4-24.9%) and seed (1.4 to 22.9%). The highest energy output was recorded in maize – wheat (265.5x103 MJ/ha) followed by maize (green cob) + frenchbean -pea- summer squash (192.4x103 MJ/ha). The energy productivity was higher in maize (green cob) + frenchbean – pea - summer squash (0.9 kg/MJ) and maize +asparagus bean-radish -onion (0.7 kg/MJ). The energy use efficiency and specific energy was highest in maize-wheat cropping system (9.3 MJ/ha and 4.1 MJ/kg, respectively).
