ABSTRACT
Although, globally India seed industry ranked 5th largest player with the robust growth, but domestically, only 24% sub-marginal and 29% marginal farmers replace seed every year against 40% by large farmers. Overall, access to quality seed by small and marginal farmers is reported to be only 20%. The informal seed sector comprising mainly farm-saved seed (FSS), which accounts 65-70% according to the Department of agriculture co-operation and farmers' welfare report 2016. Keeping the above facts in view, the study was conducted in Haryana State to assess the awareness about and adoption level off armers regarding seed replacement of rabi crops in Haryana and the results indicated that in case of wheat crop, majority of respondents (91.00%) were having high level of awareness about seed rate followed by source of seed (88.00%), seed purchased from agencies (85.00%), used farm saved seed (83.00%), varieties recommended (79.00%) and class of seed used (56.00%), respectively.A majority of respondents (88.00%) had high level of awareness of seed rate followed by used seed from agencies (87.00%), varieties recommended (81.00%), hybrid seed replacement (67.00%), span of seed replacement (56.00%) and farm saved seed (54.00%), respectively in case crop of mustard.As for as adoption level of farmers about seed replacement rate of rabi crops is concerned, a majority of respondents (85.00%) adopted seed rate followed by adopted good source of seeds (78.00%), purchased seed from agencies ((75.00%), used farm saved seeds (73.00%), used recommended varieties for sowing of wheat (61.00%) and used certified seed for crop production (49.00%), respectively about wheat crop. In case of mustard, it was observed that the majority of respondents (79.00%) had high level of adoption of seed rate followed by seed from agencies to the extent of 76.00 per cent. As for as gram is concerned, it is indicated that the majority of respondents (68.00%) had high level of adoption about seed rate followed by source of seed from agencies (61.00%), farm saved seed (52.00%), varieties recommended (48.00%), span of seed replacement (38.00%) and used certified seed (33.00%), respectively.With regards to adoption level of barley the data in predicts that majority of respondents (70.00%) had adoption level of seed rate followed by seed from agencies (58.00%), farm saved seed (56.00%), varieties recommended (48.00%), span of seed replacement (28.00%) and used certified seed (26.00%), respectively.
