ABSTRACT
A study was conducted at the Division of Floriculture and Medicinal Crops, ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research, Hessarghatta, Bangalore to assess the role of plant defence enzymes viz., Polyphenol oxidase and Superoxide dismutase in resistance against fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi (Fod) in carnation genotypes. A total of twenty carnation genotypes were initially screened for resistance against Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. dianthi, followed by they were analyzed for their polyphenol oxidase and superoxide dismutase activity under both uninoculated and inoculated conditions. Among the twenty genotypes, the resistant genotype Gioele recorded the highest polyphenol oxidase activity of 0.897 abs. min-1g-1 FW, followed by the genotype Praga (0.827 abs. min-1g-1 FW). On the other hand, the lowest activity was recorded in the genotype Dark Dona (0.218 abs. min-1g-1 FW). Similarly, superoxide dismutase activity was at its peak in the genotype Gioele (8.87 units gm-1 FW), which was followed by the genotype Praga (7.46 units gm-1 FW). On the other hand the lowest activity of the enzyme was in the genotype Dark Dona (4.11 units gm-1 FW), which was on par with Malaga (4.14 units gm-1 FW).
