ABSTRACT
The soils of Maili watershed of Hoshiarpur district (Punjab) were studied for morphological, physico-chemical and taxonomic and land capability classification. A total of ten profiles, two each from different geomorphic units such as hill-tops, hill-slopes, hill-terraces, choe beds and piedmont plains were selected for study. The soils showed varied properties and degree of profile development from different geomorphic units. The hill-top and hill-slope soils were shallow to moderately deep whereas other soils had deep to very deep profile. The soils of hill-tops to choe beds had relatively coarser texture (loam to sand) than soils of piedmont plains (silt loam to loam). Sand fraction was dominant in hill-top, hill-slope, hill-terrace and choe bed soils whereas silt fraction in piedmont plain soils. The soils were slightly acidic to alkaline in reaction having pH ranging from 6.5to 9.4, relatively higher in hills and lower in plains. EC was low (0.03to0.98dS m-1) generally increased from hill-top soils towards the piedmont plains. The wide variation in organic carbon content (0.03to42%) was due to the varying vegetative cover and geomorphic condition. Depending on degree of profile development, moisture regime, texture and calcium carbonate the Maili watershed soils were classified as Typic Ustorthents, Typic Ustipsamments, Udic Haplusteps and Typic Haplusteps. The soils belonging to land capability classes V and VII continued to be under controlled grazing and forest whereas those of classes III and IV need careful management for cultivation.
