ABSTRACT
With the enactment of protection of plant varieties and farmers rights acts 2001, the distinctness of a candidate variety from all other varieties is an important criterion for granting protection of Plant Breeder's Right. Keeping this in view, a study was conducted to characterize 20 indigenous clusterbean genotypes by using morphological markers. One variety GG-2 had white coloured flowers while others had purple coloured flowers. Most of the varieties belonged to square seed shape. Varieties were also classified on the basis of pubescence and the variety PNB was classified as glabrous and remaining all genotypes as pubescent. On the basis of pod shape the genotypes were grouped into two groups, like curved and straight. Genotypes namely HG-365, HG-75, HG-2-20, IC-102853, IC- 103060, IC- 116523, IC- 116525, IC- 116594, IC-116609, IC-116626, IC-116627, IC-116633, IC-116645 showed slightly curved pod shape and remaining genotypes showed straight pod shape. Based on number of pods per plant, genotypes were also grouped into two groups. Genotypes PNB and IC- 116577 were classified in first group (< 30 pods) and remaining 18 genotypes were grouped in second group (> 30 pods). Significant difference was observed for pod length between the employed genotypes. The pod length varied from 4.37 cm to 11.23 cm with general mean of 5.40 cm. The variety PNB recorded largest pod length of 11.23 cm, whereas, IC-116626 exhibited smallest pod length of 4.37 cm among studied genotypes. Such characterization of genotypes may provide the valuable information for the effective plant breeding and plant variety protection programme.
