SHIVALI SHARMA, K. KUMAR and AMIT KUMAR. 2014. Characterization of walnut (Jugans regia L.) germplasm for nut and kernel quality attributes. Green Farming  Vol. 5 (5) : 866-868  ;  September-October, 2014

ABSTRACT
Eleven exotic walnut germplasm accessions were selected for the present study with a view to characterize and assess the variation in nut and kernel characters having economic importance. Ovate to broad elliptic shape of nuts through suture and trapezoid to elliptic, perpendicular to suture was observed for different accessions. Nut diameter through suture ranged from 22.61 to 30.07 mm while from perpendicular to suture ranged between 24.12 to 34.31 mm. Weight of the nut ranged from 3.97 g in 'Xin Zad Fen' to as high as 10.97 g in 'Howard'. Shell thickness varied from 1.09 to 3.14 mm, while smooth, medium and rough texture of shell was observed in different accessions. Early harvesting of nuts was done on 5th August (Aksu ? 417) and last harvesting was done on 19th August (Xin Zad Fen and Howard). Kernel weight varied from 2.00 g (Mayette) to 4.71 g (Zhong Lin ? 3), however colour of kernels varied from light brown to medium to dark. Kernel percentage, kernel protein and kernel fat ranged between 35.55 per cent (Howard) to 64.81 per cent (Cisco), 3.00 (Placentia) to 11.30 per cent (Graves Franquette) and 40.00 per cent (Mayette and Placentia) to 55.50 per cent (Graves Franquette), respectively.
