ABSTRACT
Losses to the agricultural produce of pomegranate is significantly attributed to the bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae. Twenty different isolates of this pathogen were obtained from infected fruits and its identity was confirmed by morphological, physiological and pathogenicity tests. Twenty isolates of X. axonopodis pv. punicae were clustered using UPGMA on the basis of disease score produced in five cultivars (Ganesh, Ruby, Bhagwa, Jyoti and Mridula), which revealed that four isolates namely Xap5, Xap9, Xap15 and Xap16 were highly virulent on almost all the cultivars tested, producing the maximum disease score of six. The cultivar Ganesh was found to be most susceptible as 55 % isolates were found to be highly virulent on it, followed by Jyoti and Mridula which were highly susceptible to 40 % isolates, while, Bhagwa and Ruby were found to be comparatively less susceptible. Majority of the isolates were resistant to penicillin and ampicilin antibiotics tested, while 35% isolates showed resistance to streptomycin, tetracycline and chloramphenicol at different concentration.
