ABSTRACT
An experiment comprising 3 line x 11 tester mating design were conducted to study the nature and magnitude of gene action i.e. general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) of 14 yield and yield contributing characters in rice at Research-cum-Instructional Farm, Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (C.G.) in rabi 2014 and kharif 2015. The 33 F1’s and their parents were evaluated with one standard checks in a Randomized complete block design with three replications. The estimates of gca effects indicated that, among females, IR 58025A, IR 79156A and CRMS 32A, among males MTU 1010, Abhaya, Indira Barani Dhan 1, and Dukong were found as good general combiners for grain yield other yield related characters. Cross combinations IR 58025A/Dukong, IR 58025A/MTU1010, CRMS 32A/Abhaya, CRMS 32A/IR 681444 and IR 58025A/Indira barani Dhan 1 were observed to be good specific cross combinations for grain yield and most of other yield related characters. The preponderance of non-additive type of gene actions clearly indicated that selection of superior plants should be use for further improvement.
