ABSTRACT
The present experiment was conducted for estimating combining ability effects for different characters in a line x tester design comprising 30 crosses produced by crossing of 10 lines and 3 testers in RBD with three replications. Varieties VRRG-416, VRRG-16, NRGH-23, KGRGH-22 BSS-405 and VRRG-34 showed good general combining ability for yield appear to be worthy of exploitation in future hybrid development. It is suggested that population involving these lines may be developed through multiple crossing isolating high yielding varieties. The specific combining ability effects indicated that choice of parents could be based on per se performance. The selection in ridge gourd can be based on the combination of two characters, i.e., number of fruits per vine and fruit weight for higher yield over straight selection. The cross combinations of L6 x T3 in E1 environment, L4 x T1 in E2 and E4 environment and L2 x T3 in E3 environment showed highest sca effects.
