ABSTRACT
Combining ability effects were estimated in a line x tester crossing programme comprising 35 hybrids produced by crossing 7 lines comprised of 2 GMS lines (GMS-1 and GMS-4) and 5 testers. The parents IIHR-296, IIHR-299, GMS-1 and Parbhani Kranti were good general combiners for total yield per plant and marketable yield per plant. Therefore, inclusion of these lines in hybridization programme can produce promising recombinants. The crosses IIHR-294 x Varsha Uphar, GMS-1 x VRO-6, GMS-1 x Varsha Uphar, IIHR-294 x JNDO-5 and IIHR-299 x JNDO-5 shown significant positive sca effects for marketable yield per plant. However, Genic Male Sterility (GMS) based hybrids viz., GMS-1 x VRO-6, GMS-1 x Varsha Uphar, GMS-4 x Arka Anamika and GMS-4 x Varsha Uphar exhibited maximum significant sca effects in desired direction for most of characters. Therefore, improving the combining ability of GMS lines (GMS-1 and GMS-4) through recurrent selection has better scope of getting superior hybrid combinations with the added advantage of saving 70% of the time and labor required for hybrid seed production by effective utilization of Genic Male Sterility of these lines.
