ABSTRACT
Forty four hybrids developed in line x tester mating design involving four male sterile lines and eleven testers along with parents were analyzed for combining ability. The analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences among genotypes and hybrids for all the characters. The standard heterosis ranged from -65.52 to 204.52 for grain yield per plant. Variances of SCA were higher than the GCA variances for most of the traits which indicated predominance of non-additive gene action in the inheritance of these traits. CMS line IR68897A and male parents, KMR-3, IR32809 and IR65483 were found to be good general combiners for most of the characters studied. The significance of SCA and GCA for all studied traits revealed that both additive and non-additive gene effects contributed to the inheritance of these traits. Based on per se performance and standard heterosis the hybrids IR-68897A x KMR 3, IR-68897A x IR -60199-B-B-2-1R, IR-68888A x KMR 3 and IR-68897A x IR-65912-90-1-6-3-2-3R were identified as the superior hybrids for panicle length, grains per panicle and grain yield.
