ABSTRACT
Combining ability studies were carried out for green cob yield and yield contributing traits in 45 single cross sweet corn hybrids produced by crossing ten elite parents in a diallel fashion excluding reciprocals. The hybrids along with parents and a check Sugar-75, were evaluated during rabi, 2010-11. The results of combining ability analysis revealed significant mean squares due to general and specific combining ability indicating that both additive and non-additive gene actions were important in the inheritance of the characters studied. Variances due to SCA were larger than GCA for all the characters indicating the predominance of non- additive gene action in expression of various traits. The parent, P4 recorded significant negative gca effect and was good general combiners for earliness coupled with significant positive gca effect for green cob yield. The hybrids, P3XP9, P5XP8 and P1XP8 were found to be good specific combiners for earliness. While the hybrids, P5XP8, P5XP6, P1XP10, P2XP6 and P6XP10 which recorded positively significant sca effects for green cob yield revealed the involvement of either one or both poor general combiners.
