ABSTRACT
A study was conducted to evaluate combining ability of 8 genetically divergent parental strains of safflower by diallel analysis (excluding reciprocals) with respect to seed yield and its components. The combining ability analysis revealed that GCA effects and SCA effects were significant for most of the characters studied, suggesting importance of both additive and non- additive gene action. However, the estimated GCA/SCA variances ratios were lower than unity for seed yield and its components revealing predominance of non-additive gene action for majority of the characters. The parents PBNS-12, A-1 and SSF-906 were good general combiners for seed yield per plant and number of seeds per capitulum. Among the crosses A-1 x PBNS-12, PBNS-12 x SSF-902, PBNS-12 x SSF-906, Phule x PBNS-12 and Tara x PBNS-12 showed significant and high SCA effects for seed yield per plant and most of the yield contributing characters.
