ABSTRACT
The present study was conducted in Belgaum district major vegetable producing district of north Karnataka. Large numbers of farmers practice the organic cultivation of tomatoes in the district. For the study 30 farmers each practicing organic and inorganic cultivation of tomatoes spread over the district of Belgaum were selected randomly, the data analysed using tabular presentation method.
The estimated per acre cost of cultivation of organic and inorganic tomatoes was Rs 17157.97 and Rs 17702.53 respectively. The per acre average yield of organic tomatoes was 5.81 tonnes as against 6.95 tonnes in inorganic tomatoes. The per tone market price for organic and inorganic tomatoes were Rs 9550.00 and Rs 6850.00 respectively. The transportation cost for organic tomatoes was Rs 2562.01 per acre as against Rs 2756.64 for inorganic tomatoes. The per acre commission charges for organic and inorganic tomatoes were Rs 3620.63 and Rs 3478.93 respectively. The gross returns of organic tomatoes were Rs 55989.07 per acre as against Rs 47012.62 for inorganic tomatoes. The net returns of organic tomatoes (Rs 32649.12) were higher than that of inorganic tomatoes (Rs 23074.52). The B:C ratio for organic tomatoes was 2.40 as against 1.96 for inorganic tomatoes.
