ABSTRACT
Guava wilt is considered as the most limiting biotic factor in the production of this fruit. Present experiment was conducted to assess the compatibility of Chinese guava (Psidium friedrichsthalianum L.), a dwarf and wilt resistant plant as rootstock with four leading guava cultivars (Local Landrace, Lucknow-49, Allahabad Safeda and Allahabad Red) under field condition during spring-summer season of 2006 in Chitwan, Nepal. This experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four treatments and five replications. Spliced approach grafting was performed with both the graft components growing on pots. Local Landrace grafted onto Chinese guava exhibited the maximum success (66.67%) as compared to Lucknow-49 (60%) and Allahabad Safeda (53.33%). The lowest success of 36.67% was achieved with the combination of Allahabad Red onto Chinese guava. Moreover, Local Landrace grafted onto Chinese guava showed faster callusing (78.53 days), earlier graft union formation (101.8 days) and less percentage of dead plants before (10 %) and after (25.93 %) detachment. Further, this combination exhibited the highest graft height increment rate (1.77 cm/ month). Furthermore, profuse suckering was observed in the combination of Lucknow-49 with Chinese guava followed by the grafting of Local Landrace onto Chinese guava. Suckering was obtained as positively correlated with the success in grafting. Thus, Local Landrace was found to be the most successful scion with Chinese guava followed by Lucknow-49 under field condition in spring-summer season in Chitwan, Nepal. Allahabad Red showed poor performance with Chinese guava.
