ABSTRACT
Sericulture is an agro-based industry providing lively hood to about seven million of rural people in India. As sericulture activities comprises of both on farm and nonfarm activities, it provides immense employment potential for both men and women alike. Hence a document of the farmers to check the adoption level is important. The study was conducted in the year 2017-2018 in Molakalmuru, Challakere and Hiriyur taluks of Chitradurga district in Karnataka. From this district 120 respondents were selected. The constraints faced by the Bi-voltine silkworm rearing farmers with respect to production constraints, lack of knowledge on method of planting, lack of knowledge on pest and disease management, lack of knowledge about soil type or soil suitable for mulberry cultivation and shortage of irrigation water were accorded I, II, III and IV ranks, respectively. In respect of silkworm rearing constraints, lack of knowledge on Uzi fly(I rank), lack of knowledge on pest and disease control (II rank), lack of knowledge on feeding of Chawki worms( III rank) and Lack of knowledge on disinfection of rearing house secured (IV rank). In respect of marketing constraints, majority of the Bi-voltine silkworm rearing farmers expressed, Lack of e-trading in cocoon market, Exploitation by traders, High fluctuation of market prices and Lack of knowledge on prices were accorded I, II, III and IV ranks, respectively. Major suggestions expressed by the Bi-voltine silkworm rearing farmers were provision for Timely and adequate supply of inputs; Govt. should give inputs like DFLs and fertilizers at subsidized rates and Timely and adequate information reg. availability of inputs, prices, arrivals etc… were accorded I, II, and III ranks respectively. Karnataka State Department of Sericulture would arrange for timely supply of adequate inputs, avoid the middlemen and provide good marketing facility for the sericulturists.
