ABSTRACT
Realizing the adverses effect of pesticides and chemical fertilizers in agriculture, there is a serious concern towards the organic farming. Use of Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) is considered as an ecofriendly and economical tool for pest management. Recently, the use of animal by products such as cow urine and butter milk for insect pest control is gaining importance. Indian farmers are using cow urine and cow dung as manures in their fields since for a long period as traditional method. During past few years attempts have been made to evaluate and demonstrate the impact of cow urine on crop growth and in suppressing the insect pest population. Its use on crops provides the resistance to pests and increases the overall crop yield due to immunostimulant activity of cow urine. So far pest management is concerned the cow urine has been used as natural attractant to attract few insect pests. Dipterous adults of Glossinidae (Glossina fuscipes fuscipes) and Tabanidae (Tabanus and Hybomitra spp.) attractant towards the traps baited with cow urine. It acts as a nutrient as well as hormone and believed to served as repellent for insects. Cow urine tested at different levels (concentrations) either alone or in combination with recommended insecticides provided effective control of many insect pests. Neem Seed Kernel Extract (in cow urine) at 3 % concentration found to be promising to manage various insect pests infesting chilli, soybean, pigeonpea, sesame, linseed, mustard, cabbage, beans and blackgram. This practice ultimately reduces the insecticidal load in nature. Besides, insecticidal properties the cow has also some moulluscidal activity. Its exposure to sunlight for 15 days period altered the PH value. Various additives such as Allium sativum bulb powder, Azadirachta indica oil, Annona squamosa seed powder, Ferula asafoetida root latex mixed to cow urine in sunlight found to be more effective against snail, Lymnaea acuminata than treatment with cow urine alone.
