ABSTRACT
A study was conducted in the riverine alluvial soils of Kerala to assess the effect of a customized multi nutrient mixture on growth and yield of vegetables. Geo referenced soil samples were collected from different vegetable growing areas and analytical results revealed that the soil was strongly acidic with low to medium organic carbon content and potassium and medium to very high available P. Magnesium, Sulphur and B were deficient in 89 per cent samples and Calcium was deficient in 76 per cent samples. A customized multi nutrient mixture with a composition of N (3.8%)+ P (3.8%) + K (3.8%) + Ca (0.36% + Mg (1%)+ Zn (1.2%) + B (2.1%) +Cu (1.2%) +Mn (1.1%) @ 20 kg ha-1 was developed and the effect of multi nutrient mixture was assessed in the field experiments using Cowpea and Bitter gourd. Application of soil test based NPK + foliar application of 0.5 per cent solution of customized multi nutrient mixture @ 5 kg ha-1 in two splits at 15 DAS and 35 DAS (T9) yielded significantly higher over rest of the treatments in both the crops and recorded the highest B:C ratio. The study revealed that there is a scope for the use of mixture of multi nutrients to overcome the multiple nutrient deficiencies in riverine alluvial soils of Kerala. Secondary and micro nutrient deficiency is one of the yield barriers in vegetable production and this can be broken down by the application of this customized multi-nutrient mixture. Application of multi nutrient mixtures customized for soil and crops will ensure increased yield and sustenance of soil health.
