ABSTRACT
This paper describes the fertility gradient and plot shape of paddy crop in Madurai district. The uniformity trial was conducted in paddy with an area of 288 sq. m. The basic unit 1mx1m was used (totally 288 basic units) and the yield data were recorded separately. The optimum plot shape was determined by using variance per unit area. 'F' test showed that most of the variance were non-significant. The row and column sum of squares were used to determine the direction of fertility gradient. The productivity contour map was drawn by using moving averages. The optimum plot shape of paddy crop found as square shape plots. Row mean sum of squares (98.48) was less than that of column mean sum of squares (918.072). The fertility gradient was along North-South direction in the study area. The high soil fertility level (580-590) was present in major areas of the paddy field.
