ABSTRACT
The experiment was aimed in studying the dry matter accumulation and nutrient uptake by the two source of planting materials, i.e., tissue culture plantlets and conventional suckers of banana cv ‘Grande Naine’. Plant samples were collected at three stages of growth (vegetative six months age, shooting and harvesting) and nutrient contents viz., nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) of different parts of third leaf i.e. Lamina, midrib and petiole were determined. The results revealed that per cent moisture content in different leaf components was slightly higher in conventional sucker over tissue culture plants, while the dry matter content was recorded higher in tissue culture plants of both Plant crop and Ratoon 1. The highest moisture content and total N, P and K uptake in different leaf components was noted in leaf lamina, however, the midrib of tissue culture plants contains the highest dry matter content. The N and P content of leaf lamina, leaf midrib and leaf petiole and K content of leaf lamina and leaf midrib gradually declined from vegetative to harvest stage in both the Plant crop and Ratoon 1 irrespective of types of plant propagules. The total N, P and K uptake by the individual leaf, green leaves per plant at harvest and whole leaf per hectare was recorded higher in tissue culture plants over conventional sucker grown plants in both Plant crop and Ratoon 1. The K uptake by individual leaf, green leaf per plant at harvest and whole leaf per hectare was higher than the uptake of N or P.
