ABSTRACT
An attempt has been made to perform a detailed survey of 300 farmers from 25 villages in 5 blocks of Hooghly district, envisages the fact that fertilizers was being used in excess of requirement (about 50.67% higher over the recommended doses). Analysis of data revealed the fact that 3.8, 107.0 and 125.0% of applied N, P and K, respectively could be considered as excess of requirement. This ultimately results in a substantial economic loss of Rs. 4070/ ha/ seasons. Total nutrient removal by potato was estimated as 624 kg/ha but without considering soil inherent nutrient status, farmers usually applied 885 kg of nutrient/ha.
