Economic feasibility of intercropping of linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) and chickpea under rainfed condition

ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted at Main Agricultural Research Station, Raichur, Karnataka for three successive winter seasons of 2009 to 2011 under rainfed conditions in medium black soils to explore the performance of linseed genotypes in 4:2 row proportion of chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) + linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) under rainfed condition. The pooled results revealed that, chickpea (JG-11) + linseed (Jawahar-23) in 4:2 row proportions recorded significantly higher linseed grain equivalent yield (878 kg/ha) and was on par with chickpea (JG-II) + linseed (Indira Alsi-32) (812 kg/ha). Significantly lower linseed grain equivalent yield was observed in chickpea (JG-II) + linseed (Suyog) (694 Kg/ha). Jawahar-23 of linseed genotypes recorded highest grain yield (691 kg/ha) in its sole stand and registering an advantage of 166 and 265 kg/ha over Padmini (525 kg/ha) and Suyog (426 kg/ha) respectively. Among different intercropping treatments, the highest net returns (Rs. 12,664 ha-1) and B:C ratio (2.32) was obtained with chickpea (JG-11) + linseed (Jawahar-23) and closely followed by chickpea (JG-II) + linseed (Indira Alsi) (`10, 806/ha & 2.12).
