ABSTRACT
Among the foodgrains, paddy, wheat, jowar, pearl millet and maize are the important general cereal crops grown in our country. Maize is a miracle crop. It has very high yield potential. Maize is the important source of foodgrain among the cereal crops grown in the state. This is competitive and therefore, calls for its economic evaluation. Therefore, it was decided to take up this particular study with the objectives in mind as to estimate costs, returns and profitability of maize cultivation.
The per hectare human and bullock labour requirement for grain maize cultivation increased with the increase in size of holdings. i) Female human requirement is more than the male human labour requirement ii)The benefit-cost ratio at the overall level, for grain maize was greater than unity, therefore, grain maize is a profitable and iii) Among the various factors of production, human labour, nitrogenous fertilizers, manures and irrigation were observed to be the most important factors influencing the productivity of maize crop.It is possible to suggest the policy implications in regard with grain maize cultivation as- the increase in the use of inputs manures and fertilizers in case of grain maize cultivation. be followed and there is need to advise maize growers to use machine power if possible in order to minimize per hectare human labour requirement and it's dependence because it contributed the maximum share in cost of cultivation of maize.
