ABSTRACT
The present study on economics of production and processing of mango in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra was undertaken to know cost and returns, producers’ share in consumer’s rupee, Benefit-cost ratio and problem in production and processing of mango. The study has been undertaken in Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra. Data pertains for the year 2010-11. Per hectare establishment cost of Mango orchard during five year for overall age group of orchard was ` 41,796.08 and the per hectare year establishment cost for bearing life of the orchard i.e. 20 years was ` 2,089.80. The output-input ratio was higher in Dhanora tahsil (1:2.57).The increase in the value of processed product over fresh mango pickle is higher (1936.36 per cent) than amchur (860.00 per cent). Break even analysis for processing units shows that the units are running very well above the break-even point. As regards marketing of mango, there was only one channel of marketing [(channel- producer – consumer (NGO)].Thus, Producers’ share in consumer’s rupee was observed 93.59 per cent. Total marketing cost incurred by mango grower in transportation and market fees contributes higher. Distress sell due to Naxalites was the major problem in production and Remunerative prices was the major problem in case of marketing of mango. High packaging cost and hot climatic conditions were the major aspects affecting the profitability of mango processed products and major problems faced by processing units.
