ABSTRACT
To evaluate the post-harvest application of 1-MCP on the storage life of Golden Delicious apples studies were conducted at the division of Post-Harvest Technology SKUAST-K, Shalimar. Physiologically mature Golden Delicious apples (full green in color) harvested after 150 days from full bloom were treated with 1- MCP (1ppm) for 24 hours under small scale airtight plastic tent at 14±20C. After 1-MCP application treated and untreated fruits were subsequently stored under two storage conditions i.e. non-refrigerated (12±20C) and refrigerated (0-20C) conditions for monitoring various quality changes. The studies indicated that de-greening of untreated golden delicious apples occurred within 41 days while as de-greening of 1-MCP treated apples occurred after 80 days of ambient storage. Other quality attributes like fruit firmness, juiciness and TSS and acidity were retained in treated samples up to 130 days while as to untreated apples retain the same quality parameters up to 40 days, thus the shelf-life of treated apples was increased by 90 days under non-refrigerated conditions (12±20C). Similarly under refrigerated conditions 1-MCP treated fruits retained maximum quality attributes up to 270 days while as untreated fruits retained quality attributes up to 180 days thus storage life was increased by 90 days. Post cold storage detioration in 1-MCP treated apples was very slow as compared to untreated fruits. Maximum quality parameters in 1-MCP treated apples were retained up to 15 days of ambient storage (22 ±20C) after refrigerated storage of 270 days while untreated fruits retained quality parameters up to 5 days.
