ABSTRACT
At present utilization of hydroponic techniques for commercial vegetable production is becoming popular. Hence an attempt was made to develop suitable hydroponic techniques for protected cultivation of tomato in aggregate hydroponics. The experiment was laid out in a factorial randomized block design at T.N. Agricultural University, Tamil Nadu. Three different hydroponic systems, i.e. tray, trough & pot and three different media combinations, i.e., cocopeat+gravel+silex stone, cocopeat+pebble+silex stone & cocopeat+perlite+silex stone, constituted the factors of the treatment. The highest plant height of 205.2 cm at 150 days after transplanting was obtained from plants grown in pot system with cocopeat+perlite+silex stone. The lowest plant height (188.6 cm) was obtained from plants grown in tray system with cocopeat+pebble+silex stone. The earliest maturity (64 days after transplanting) of plants in polyhouse was observed in trough with cocopeat+ perlite+silex stone immediately followed by tray with cocopeat+gravel+silex stone and trough with cocopeat+gravel+silex stone in 65 days. The maximum fruit weight (81.2 g) was recorded for the treatment trough with cocopeat+gravel+silex stone. The maximum (4.9 kg/plant) yield was observed for the treatment trough with cocopeat+gravel+silex stone followed by trough with cocopeat + perlite + silex stone and trough with cocopeat+pebble+silex stone with values 4.2 and 3.9 kg/plant respectively. So for the hydroponic culture of tomato, cocopeat+ gravel+silex stone (2:1:1 v/v) should be used as a growing media. To increase the productivity of tomato, plants should be grown in trough growing system.
