ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted at Agricultural Research Station, Bheemarayanagudi during kharif and rabi seasons of 2013-14 and 2014-15 to study effect of brown manuring on growth, yield and economics of maize under irrigated area. The results indicated that the grain yield of maize (55.35 q ha-1) was significantly higher with sunnhemp as green manuring in 1:2 row proportions compared to sole maize (60 cm x 20 cm) without manuring (43.85 q ha-1) and it was found on par with sunnhemp, cowpea and dhaincha as brown manuring in 1:1 and 1: 2 row proportions in maize. Significantly higher biomass ( 1.67 t ha- 1) and N accumulation ( 55.11 kg ha-1) was recorded with sunnhemp as green manuring in 1:2 ratio followed by sunnhemp as brown manuring in 1:2 ratio compared to other treatments. Sunnhemp recorded higher N content (3.23 to 3.31 %) followed by cowpea (3.16 to 3.18 %) as compared to dhaincha (2.75 to 2.82 %). Significantly higher organic carbon, available NPK, dehydrogenase activity was noticed in green and brown manuring treatments as compared to control (60 cm X 20cm). The nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium uptake by maize at harvest was maximum with sunnhemp as green and brown manuring and cowpea as brown manuring than non manured sole maize i.e. (60 cm x 20 cm). The net returns and BC ratio were also differed significantly among the green and brown manuring practices in maize. The higher net returns and B:C ratio were observed with these treatments compared to sole maize (60 cm x 20 cm).
