ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of pruning and foliar spray of ZnSO4 @ 0.5% + Urea @ 2% on growth, flowering, fruiting behavior and fruit yield of mango cv. Baneshan under high density planting during 2009-10, 2010-11 and 2011-12 at Horticulture College and Research Institute, Anantharajupet. The trees were subjected to different treatments viz., T1: Pruning up to 1st node, T2: Pruning up to 2nd node, T3: Pruning up to 3rd node, T4: Pruning up to 1st node + Spraying, T5: Pruning up to 2nd node + Spraying, T6: Pruning up to 3rd node + Spraying and T7: Control (no pruning and spraying). The effect of three levels of pruning alone and in combination with foliar spraying on mango growth, flowering and fruiting was significant. Among the seven treatments imposed, time taken for bud sprouting was less in T6 (18.03 days) followed by T5 (18.30 days). T6 recorded highest number of buds sprouted per shoot (4.58), number of laterals per shoot (4.23) and number of laterals per shoot flowered (0.42). Time taken from pruning to flowering was earliest in T5 (159.67 days) followed by T6 (167.00 days). No. of fruits per panicle were more in T6 (0.63) followed by T5 (0.55). Pruning up to second and third node recorded significantly higher values for number of fruits per tree, average fruit weight, yield per tree and TSS. This might be due to stimulating effect of pruning in the formation of vegetative and reproductive shoots and the supplementation of nitrogen and Zinc through foliar application of ZnSO4and urea. Conclusively, pruning up to second or third node along with spraying of ZnSO4 @ 0.5% + Urea @ 2% can be recommended for restoring the production and increasing the productivity in mango cultivar Baneshan under high density planting.
