ABSTRACT
A multifactor experiment on effect of different plant spacing and nitrogen levels on growth and yield of candytuft (Iberis umbellata L.) cv. “Swiss White” under south Gujarat condition was conducted at Floriculture Rese. Farm, ASPEE College of Horticulture & Forestry, Navsari Agric. University, Navsari during 2011-2012. The treatments comprised of three levels of spacing (20 x 10 cm, 30 x 10 cm and 40 x 10 cm) and four levels of nitrogen (50, 75, 100 and 125 kg ha-1) in a factorial randomized block design and replicated thrice. The result revealed that higher plant height, length of axis and seed yield was obtained at a closer spacing of 20 x 10 cm and fertilized with 125 kg nitrogen per hectare. Wider spacing of 40 x 10 cm recorded maximum vegetative and flowering characters viz., plant spread, length of peduncle, number of branches, number of spikes, days to first flower appearance, diameter of umbel, number of flowers per umbel and number of umbels per plant. Plant spacing of 20 x 10 cm and nitrogen application @ 125 kg ha-1 proved to be optimum and economical for improving flower and seed yield of candytuft cv. Swiss White.
