ABSTRACT
Field experiment was conducted to evaluate the different sources and levels of sulphur on the growth and yield of sugarcane under sandy loam soil condition. Two sulphur sources viz., gypsum and elemental sulphur and four sulphur levels viz., 125, 150, 175 and 200 kg ha-1 were compared with control. The nitrogen and phosphorus sources of fertilizers (single superphosphate and ammonium phosphate sulphate) supplied 104 kg sulphur ha-1 uniformly to all treatments and hence remaining sulphur (21, 46, 71 and 96 kg ha-1) were applied through gypsum and elemental sulphur as per the treatment requirement. The treatments were compared with the current practice of 104 kg sulphur ha-1 through N and P sources and with the absolute control where no sulphur was applied. The results revealed that application of 200 kg S ha-1 (104 kg through N and P source + 96 kg S through elemental source) recorded the highest growth characters, yield attributes and cane yield of sugarcane. It was statistically comparable with sulphur at 200 kg and 175 kg S ha-1 (104 kg through N and P source and remaining through gypsum) and 175 kg and 150 kg S ha-1 (104 kg through N and P source and remaining through elemental sulphur).
Key words :
