ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted at Zonal Agricultural Research Station, Navile, Shimoga, to study the effect of different levels (10, 20 and 30 kg ha-1) and sources of sulphur (elemental sulphur, ammonium sulphate and gypsum) on the productivity of maize. Among different sources and levels of S, 30 kg S ha-1 as ammonium sulphate recorded highest cob length (20.38cm), cob weight (1.34 kg), number of seeds per cob (645.16). Least yield parameters were observed in control. Highest grain yield of 74.80 q ha-1 was obtained with the treatment sulphur at 30 kg ha-1 as ammonium sulphate and it was on par with treatment sulphur at 30 kg ha-1 as gypsum (73.49 q ha-1) and sulphur at 30 kg ha-1 as elemental sulphur (71.51 q ha-1). The uptake of nutrients in maize grain increased due to application of different sources and levels of sulphur. S at 30 kg ha-1 as ammonium sulphate recorded significantly higher N, P, K and S uptake by grain (161.55, 77.65, 61.06 and 29.17 kg ha-1, respectively) compared to control and other treatments. Grain and stover yields recorded significant and positive correlation with N, P, K. Ca, Mg and S uptake by grain and stover.
