ABSTRACT
Sixteen lactating indigenous cows were selected from the herd. These experimental animals were selected on the basis of nearness in body weight, number of lactations completed and stage of lactation. These animals were fed feeds and fodder without urea(T1) and with different levels of urea as 2%(T2), 3%(T3) and 4% (T4). The treatment effect on DM intake was significant over experimental period and it was higher in T4 treatment. The water intake was also significantly different between treatments and it was lower in T4 treatment. Body weight gain was maximum in treatment T4. Supplementation of urea treated straw in the diets of cows increased milk yield significantly. The cows of treatment T4 produced maximum milk yield. Marked decrease in fat content was observed by the addition of urea treated straw in ration of lactating cow and it was lower in T4 treatment. There was slightly increase in protein content in T4 treatment. The difference in total solids content were non-significant between the feeding treatment groups. On the basis of results obtained in the present investigation it can be concluded that 4 per cent urea treated jowar straw was helpful for improving milk production performance of the lactating indigenous cows.
