ABSTRACT
A field experiment was conducted in the established mulberry garden (V-1 variety) of training division, CSR&TI, Mysore, to study the effect of sunhemp and seri-compost on soil health, soil microbial population, leaf quality and quantity traits of mulberry. The mulberry plot was given five different treatments with and without green manure (sunhemp) and seri-compost. In T1, T2, T3 and T4, FYM was curtailed to 50% compared to control (T0) and instead green manure or seri-compost was added separately or both together in different treatments. The results revealed that T1, T2 and T3, showed better performance than control (T0) with regard to soil properties, microbial biomass and economic traits of mulberry, this may be due to efficiency of sunhemp and seri-compost incorporated in the treatments. In T4, chemical fertilizer dose was reduced to 25% and due to that leaf yield and leaf quality traits were slightly decreased whereas, the soil traits and microbial biomass increased, this might be due to the influence of sunhemp and seri-compost in T4. Among the treatments, T3 exhibited superior performance in all the traits related to soil and mulberry. Therefore, it can be recommended to the farmers to improve and sustain the soil health and mulberry productivity.
