ABSTRACT
The present investigation was conducted at the College of Agriculture (KAU), Vellayani, during 2018-19 to study the effect of major plant nutrients on the biometric characters of Popoulu banana (Musa AAB). The experiment was laid out in RBD with 14 treatments replicated thrice. The treatments comprises of combination of four levels of nitrogen and potassium which were applied in two, four and six split doses, one among the treatment was absolute control and recommendation of Nendran banana of Kerala Agricultural University as organic was also included as one treatment along with uniform application of phosphorous (115 g plant-1 year-1) and 15 kg FYM plant-1 year-1. The highest pseudostem height and girth were recorded for the treatment 350 g N, 115 g P and 525 g K plant-1 year-1 in six equal split doses along with 15 kg FYM plant-1 year-1 at all stages of growth. At two MAP, the maximum number of functional leaves (8.16), highest total functional leaf area (27,988.25 cm2) and leaf area index (0.69) were noted in NPK @ 400:115:600 g plant-1 in six equal spilt doses along with FYM 15 kg plant-1 year-1 while the application of NPK @ 350: 115: 525 g plant-1 year-1 in six equal split doses along with 15 kg FYM plant-1 year-1 resulted in maximum number of functional leaves, highest total functional leaf area and leaf area index for rest of all growing periods. The least number of days for bunch emergence (241.73 days) and crop duration (302.40 days) as well as production of more suckers (8.90) after the bunch emergence were recorded in the treatment 350 g N, 115 g P and 525 g K plant-1 year-1 in six equal split doses along with 15 kg FYM plant-1. The application of major plant nutrients at the rate of 350 g N, 115 g P and 525 g K plant-1 year-1 in six equal split doses along with 15 kg FYM plant-1 was found suitable under Kerala conditions.
