ABSTRACT
To find out the appropriate crop arrangement everywhere and nutrient management for maize and soybean intercropping system two field experiment was conducted during the kharif season of year 2014 and 2015 at the Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur (C.G). Treatments comprised of six crop arrangements viz., sole maize (C1), sole soybean (C2), maize+ soybean in 2:2 (C3) and 2:4 (C4) rows in replacement series and two additive series (two rows of soybean (C5) and one row of soybean (C6) planted in-between two rows of maize and 4 fertility levels viz., 125% recommended dose of fertilizer (RDF) (F1), 100% RDF (F2), 75% RDF (F3) and 50% RDF (F4). 2M + 2S(C3) produced 16.33% and 61.33% higher grain yield over sole maize and sole soybean, respectively. Although, all the yield attributing characters have recorded the highest value in 2M + 4S (C4), however yield was lower due to lower plant population. Sole soybean performed better in terms of both, yield and yield defining characters over intercropped soybeans. Increase in fertilizer dose from 50% to 125% RDF, showed positive effect on yield attributing characters as well as on yield of both crops.125% RDF recorded 5.75%, 16.38% and 27.03% higher grain yield over 100%, 75% and 50% RDF, respectively. Highest stover yield was produced from 2M+2S (C3), replacement series and 125% RDF (F1). Sole soybean (C2) and 50% (F4)RDF produced highest harvest index among crop systems and nutrient levels respectively. 2M+2S, replacement series registered the highest LER value (1.26). Highest gross return, net return and B:C ratio was obtained from maize+soybean, 2:2, replacement series and 125% RDF applied treatment.
