ABSTRACT
A field investigation was conducted to study the effect of nutrients, spacing and pinching on flowering and nutrient content of African marigold (Tagetes erecta L.) during 2013-14 with an objective to standardize the optimum dose of nitrogen and phosphorus and to study the effect of different pinching and spacing on flowering parameters of African marigold. Twenty treatments comprising five levels of nitrogen (0, 15, 20, 25 and 30 gm-2), four levels of phosphorus (0, 15, 20 and 25 g m-2) and six treatments comprising two levels of pinching (no pinching & pinching at 28 DAT) and three levels of spacing (40 x 40 cm, 40 x 30 cm & 30 x 30 cm) were carried out in factorial Randomized block design with three replications in all possible combinations. Results showed that the treatment combination of nitrogen 30 g/m2 with phosphorus 25 g/m2 gave better results in all floral parameters. In plant nutrient analysis, highest nitrogen and phosphorus content were obtained with the application of 30 g N/m2 and 25 g P2O5/m2. Non-significant increase in potassium content was observed with the increase in nitrogen and phosphorus application of 30 g N/m2 and 25 g P2O5/m2, respectively. In floral parameters, minimum days for bud initiation, days to flowering and 50% flowering were observed when planted in closer spacing (30 x 30 cm) with no pinching.
