ABSTRACT
The tuberous roots of the medicinal coleus (Plectranthus forskohlii Willd.) are the only source for forskolin among the plant kingdom. Application of pongamia cake equivalent to 100 per cent RDN (Recommended dose of nitrogen) recorded the highest plant height and number of branches. Plants provided with FYM equivalent to 100 per cent RDN gave 1.28 t per hectare of dry tuberous root yield. However, poultry manure, pongamia cake, pressmud and RDF application also gave on par dry tuberous root yield. Forskolin content (1.037 %) was recorded in pressmud equivalent to 100 per cent RDN treatment. As per as fresh and dry tuberous root yield concerned, significantly higher fresh (26.59%) and dry tuberous root (15.65%) yield, higher N, P and K uptake in leaf, tubers, total uptake of N (169.89 kg/ha) were obtained with the application of FYM equivalent to 100 per cent RDN. Whereas, K uptake by stem, total uptake of K and highest available N were also observed in the same treatment. Hence, alternatively in the absence of FYM, the above organic source of nitrogen can be considered for getting optimum yield in medicinal coleus under irrigated condition of Northern Dry Zone of Karnataka.
